The quiet value of independent financial advice

What changes when the person explaining your options isn't paid to sell you one.

Rates, programs, dollar figures, and rules referenced in this article are current as of the publication date shown and may have changed. Check the rates page for current rates, and verify program details with the relevant provider before acting.

Independence is easy to claim and harder to structure. It shows up in small ways: who pays for the advice, and whether the recommendation changes when the incentive does.

Questions worth asking

  • How is this person compensated for the advice they're giving me?
  • What happens to that compensation if I choose a different product?

The goal isn't cynicism — it's clarity about whose interest a recommendation serves.
